T-Mobile (TMUS) Faces 50 Million Customer Class Action Data Breach
Past T-Mobile Data Breaches and Lawsuits, 3 breaches in 2021 alone. This is not the first time T-Mobile has failed to protect its customer’s data. T-Mobile has reportedly suffered five recent data breaches. Hackers stole the personal identification data of millions of past, present, and prospective T-Mobile customers, leading to a huge class-action lawsuit.
A massive data breach involving the personal identifying information of millions of T-Mobile US Inc. customers has led to a class-action lawsuit. T-Mobile (Nasdaq: TMUS) admitted Aug. 16, 2021. On August 19, 2021, Stueve Siegel Hanson and co-counsel filed the nation’s first class-action lawsuit against T-Mobile relating to its massive data breach affecting at least 54 million people.
Earlier that week, reports surfaced that hacking groups stole the data of up to 100 million people from T-Mobile’s servers and were selling a portion of it on an underground “dark web” internet forum for 6 bitcoin, or approximately $280,000.
T-Mobile later confirmed that at least 54 million people had their information compromised, including 40 million former or prospective customers who were not current customers but had previously applied for credit with the carrier. More than 13 million victims are current “postpaid” customers—or T-Mobile customers who get billed at the end of each month. The victims had their full names, dates of birth, social security numbers, and driver’s license information stolen. 850,000 prepaid customers—who fund their accounts in advance—had their names, phone numbers, and PINs exposed. It is very possible that additional victims will be identified as T-Mobile’s investigation into the breach is ongoing.
