The earthquake sequence
A disaster that crossed borders
At 4:17 a.m. local time on February 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck south-central Türkiye near the Syrian border. About nine hours later, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck farther north. The sequence caused catastrophic damage across southern Türkiye and northern Syria.
Homes, hospitals, roads and essential services were damaged or destroyed. Families faced displacement, winter weather, interrupted health care and profound loss. In Syria, years of conflict and existing humanitarian needs made access and recovery especially difficult.
